What is a Program Assistant?
If you have observed or skated in a Canskate, Parent & Tot, Learn to Skate or Junior session at our Club, you have undoubtedly seen our red-vested Program Assistants at work. PAs are more experienced skaters, usually from one of our STARSkate programs, who volunteer their time to help new skaters and share their own passion for skating. Having the opportunity to assist allows them, in turn, to develop leadership skills and fulfill high school volunteer hours. They are great role models and a huge asset to our Club!
PAs are managed by the Professional Skating Coaches on the ice, and are tasked with helping:
demonstrate skills and teach progressions
supervise practice time
lead warm-ups and cool-downs under the direction of the coach
reinforce learned skills (following-up on coach’s instruction)
lead exercises, drills, games, creative expression exercises under the coach’s direction
hand out awards and weekly incentives
take attendance
If you have questions or concerns about the program or comments about any of our Program Assistants, please direct them to our Volunteer Co-Ordinator, Olivia D'Ambrosio.
